I remember buying Relationship Of Command in tenth grade and it changed my world. I had a ticket to their show in October at Canes in Mission Beach and then they broke up right before it, so i never got to see them live. My friends and I went to The Showcase Theatre to see Defacto play shortly their after. I remember all these kids yelling for them to play ATDI songs but they wouldn’t. You either got them or you didnt. F off to those that didnt. F off to the Coachella kids that will claim they did. Yes im being one of those types. Yes im a snob.

My Heart is ravisht with delight, when thee I think upon

Neon Trees Dec 31, 2011

To my insane friends, family and fans I have met and gotten know from all over this globe, and new friends and fans alike:

I wanted to write down my thoughts as a another year comes to a close and share with you some of the amazing things I was able to do, see and learn in 2011.

I’ve chosen some of my favorite experiences.

This year I travelled with my band so much, and Its been amazing to think back on the crowds we played music for.

At the beginning of this year we left for a European tour that included shows in Germany, Paris, Luxembourg, Holland, Scotland, London, Manchester, Spain, Australia….ETC! I fell of the stage in Holland and hit my face on the barrier below, and shattered parts of my front 4 teeth! I remember this show clearly still!

I remember so much pain and adrenaline, and getting back up and finishing that set for the crowd that was there that night.

This is the first but not the last time in this letter I will say how powerful music and the art of entertainment is to me in my life. The show, the music, the energy of it all is what got me back up to finish the set with out my teeth and with my face mangled, and I finished the entire tour with this condition till I was able to get home and get my situation fixed. Nothing else gives me the rush like the show and the fans give me.

Also this year were direct support on the My Chemical Romance World Contamination Tour. They were such an amazing group of people and love their music and fanbase so much. I felt like we were all part of a freak club every night on that tour, where it didn’t matter what color skin, hair, eyes or clothes we had. We wanted to dance and push and shove and shout to rock and roll music in a sweaty theater. I grew up going to these clubs and theaters for all of my favorite bands and I was a fan like that.

Now i have fans of my music that are as passionate as I was about my favorite bands? I am blessed and humbled by those that believe in us when so many pretentious poseurs don’t. I am proud and happy to be a bit off, a bit unhinged and a bit in your face. This year taught me to be even more comfortable in my own skin. We toured the country on our third club tour headlining for new towns and cities and It was so exciting to play all of our songs for you.

Then in the summer we did a slew of the festivals including Coachella and Bonnaroo, as well as travelled back to The UK where we played at Wireless in Hyde Park, Did Wakefest in Wales and Played T in The Park in Scotland and Oxegen Festival in Ireland! Then it was for an amazing 4 weeks where we toured in Jakarta, Singapore, Malaysia, Bali, Shanghai, Beijing, Sydney, Melbourne, Osaka and Tokyo.

I stayed an extra three days in Tokyo to soak in the beauty and wonder of that city and also spend way to much on insane clothes.

And we closed our touring year playing in Central Park in New York City and the with the North American run of Duran Duran’s All You Need Is Now tour. We played Madison Square Garden to boot! Such a radical few weeks opening for a fanbase that’s been so loving and rabid for so many years. It also reaffirmed how important it is to remain true to the show, to keep growing and keep interesting so that fans will keep coming back.

We finally made it back to Utah where we played for more than a few thousand of you at the X96 Big Ass Show and It felt like the sweetest homecoming of sorts.

The last few months of 2011 have been spent recording our second album. I am so humbled and thrilled that we even get to make a second record and that there are people that want to hear it and are anticipating it. This is what i get to do for a living? How insane.

I promise you fans that we are making something we are so proud of and I hope and visualize this album being a soundtrack for this upcoming year and hopefully years to come. All this fearlessness, all of this growth and all of the love I’ve felt from real people with real soul all over this globe is being poured into this new album. We cant wait to finish it and show it off to you.

I am so happy to have found my people this year, my true friends, my true fans and my true family. My priorities have never been more in line, and because of the intense ride this music has taken me on, I am even more excited to get back on and go again in 2012.

Live your absolute wildest and most unbelievable dreams. Live out the fantasy. Don’t hide it. Believe it or not,  there are still my weak moments where I am too quiet and to shy and to hidden out of fear. I have a new lease on life and discovery and creativity because of this year and I hope to carry it more and more with me in this next year.

May you be safe and love more and remember to be more fearless in 2012.

See you all soon

Tyler

MY FAVORITE 2011 ALBUMS & SONGS

Neon Trees
Neon Trees Dec 14, 2011

IM GOING TO BE HONEST AND SAY THAT I DIDNT REALLY LISTEN TO A LOT OF NEW MUSIC THIS YEAR. I SCANNED THE ELECTRONIC AND DANCE PAGES ON ITUNES A LOT. MOSTLY I LISTENED TO A LOT, AND I MEAN, A LOT OF DEPECHE MODE, SMITHS, REPLACEMENTS, TEENAGE FANCLUB, JOAN JETT, PETER GABRIEL, PHIL COLLINS, OLD GLASSJAW, AND A COUPLE KATY PERRY SONGS THROWN IN.

I DONT MAKE THESE LISTS TO LOOK LIKE EVERY LIST THAT COMES OUT THAT HAS THE SAME ARTISTS ON IT AND WERE ALL LEFT KIND OF SCRATCHING OUR HEADS AND WEIRDED OUT. I DONT READ PITCHFORK OR STEREOGUM. I DONT REALLY CARE. I DIDNT LIKE THE BON IVER RECORD AS A WHOLE (BETH/REST AND HOLOCENE WERE PRETTY, NOTHING AS INSTANTLY RESONATING AS SKINNY LOVE). WATCH THE THRONE HAD ONE AND A HALF SONGS THAT CAUGHT MY INTEREST (I LOVED KANYE WEST’S LAST RECORD WHOLE HEARTEDLY). I DONT CARE WHAT A CHILDISH GAMBINO IS. THE STROKES LAST RECORD WAS BORING. I CAN BARELY MAKE IT THROUGH A DRAKE SONG. TYLER, THE CREATOR IS THE WORST KIND OF SHOCK ARTIST, ALL BIGOT, NO ART. WASHED OUT’S EP WAS BETTER THAN IT’S FULL LENGTH. FLEET FOXES WERE GOOD WHEN I LIKED THEM IN 2007 AND NO ONE ELSE DID. IF I LEFT OFF SOMETHING ITS BECAUSE I DIDNT HEAR IT OR I DIDNT LIKE IT. ITS NOT A JAB TO YOU AND YOUR IMPECCABLE MUSIC TASTE.

HONESTLY I MAKE THIS LIST BECAUSE ITS BEEN A TRADITION FOR THE PAST 4 OR 5 YEARS WITH MY FRIENDS. ACTUALLY TWO OF THEM. THE THREE OF US GET IN A ROOM AND READ OUR LISTS, AND THERE IS NEVER ANY SURPRISES BECAUSE WE KNOW EACH OTHER LIKE THE BACK OF OUR HANDS. SO ITS KIND OF ALMOST POINTLESS. REALLY ONLY THE FIRST YEAR WAS KIND OF FUN. BUT I DIGRESS.

IF I HAD MY WAY TWIN SHADOW’S FORGET OR THE NATIONAL’S HIGH VIOLET OR ROBYN’S BODY TALK WOULD BE MY NUMBER ONE, BUT THEY CAME OUT LAST YEAR.

SO HERE’S MY FAVORITE, NOT YOUR FAVORITE, NOT EVEN YOUR TOP, NOT EVEN THE TOP, NOT EVEN THE BEST, JUST SIMPLY MY FAVORITE ALBUMS THAT WERE RELEASED IN 2011 THAT I HEARD THAT I ENJOYED IN SOMEWAY AND RESONATED IN MY LITTLE BODY AND SOMEHOW STUCK IN MY BRAIN THAT HAS A MILLION DIFFERENT SONGS ALWAYS PLAYING IN IT ALL OF THE TIME. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Neon Trees (more info)
  • Label: Mercury Records
  • Label Type: major
  • About:
"Habits" featuring the single Animal, AVAILABLE NOW!
    Buy from iTunes
Like their name, Neon Trees are a combination of slick pop hooks and sturdy organic rock, both melodic and hard-hitting, their anthems of adolescent angst, longing, love lost and found, delivered with the kind of heart-on-the-sleeve passion that only comes from hard work and commitment.

Their Mercury Records debut, Habits, produced by friend, singer/guitarist Tim Pagnotta, is a refreshing blast of timeless rock energy and spirit that wouldn’t sound out of place at any point from ‘60s garage-rock to 2010 dance rock, with the first single, “Animal,” taking off from a round of weaving, angular guitars into a song equally at home in the arena as on the dance floor, a paean to sexual longing in which singer/front man Tyler Glenn wails, “Take a bite of my heart tonight.,” and you have no reason to doubt his sincerity.

Take hook-happy new wave, add to it the classic-rock story-telling humanity and leaven with other-worldly charisma, and you begin to understand the palette Neon Trees are working from.

“I have this weird, obsessive nature of wanting to be a superhero,” admits Glenn, who cites his two favorite performers as the Boss and the King of Pop. “I just want to help my friends and the people I love by saving them, only to realize they’re really saving me by listening to the music. The songs are all about forgiveness, love and passion, which basically sums up the whole vibe of what we’re about as a band, professionally and spiritually.”

In the opening “Sins of my Youth,” Tyler reminisces about a childhood of trial, error and eventual self-discovery. “I’ve got these habits I cannot break… Call me crazy/I was born to make a mess.” “Your Surrender” takes Roy Orbison’s romantic plaint and sets it up against Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, while “Girls and Boys in School” speaks for itself, with a playground chant over a dark yet sing-along synth-pop chorus. Chris Allen has a quirky, edgy Johnny Marrr-meets-The Edge guitar playing while drummer Elaine Bradley drums with the intensity of John Bonham adding a heartbeat to the sensuality of the songs.

“We’re all about songs which relate the human experience,” says Las Vegas native, bassist Branden Campbell. “The emotion is very important to us. Our logo is a human heart with wings. We try to keep it real, but we’re not afraid to dream, either, work hard and admit we want success.”

“We approach the songs from a classic perspective,” adds guitarist Chris Allen, who formed the initial group in Southern California with neighbor Tyler, who lived around the corner. “Even from the start, it was all about the music for us. We didn’t even talk, just practice.”

“I’ve always tried to keep my feet on the ground with my songwriting,” adds Tyler, a self-taught musician who began composing when he was six. “I try to focus on getting out what I’m thinking and feeling. It’s a tool to help me cope with all the weird things that come into my mind. I’m just happy to have found that outlet.”

When Allen moved to Provo, UT, to attend school, Glenn followed him, knowing he wanted to play music with Allen.

“That was a real awkward trip,” laughs Chris. “We drove all the way out there and hardly said a word to each other. All we knew was we wanted to play music together.”

Once there, they were soon joined by Campbell on bass and drummer Bradley, a Midwestern Led Zeppelin/Depeche Mode fan, a combination that clicked despite the fact the individual members eventually discovered they were all very different people.

“We are all so fascinatingly different,” explains Bradley, who has been playing in bands since she was 14, first as a guitarist then as a drummer. “Tyler’s the quirky serious type who is really a goofball. Branden’s the musical history encyclopedia. Chris is the manual labor. Being in this band is like an arranged marriage where divorce is not an option, and I’m ok with that.”

Being signed to a major label hasn’t changed Neon Trees one bit.

“Our goal and how we play are still the same,” insists Tyler. “We’ve always tried to evoke a larger-than-life feel, even if we’re playing to 10 people in a garage. We’re just trying to keep our feet on the ground and remember why we started doing this in the first place.”

“Music is a sacred act of communion for me, offering hope and love,” says Tyler. “That’s the heart of this band. Just like in life, though, you need to have fun, too, you have to laugh and dance and sing. The songs that last and get people to feel something are the ones they can sing along to and really identify with.” “There’s so much breath to what we do,” adds Elaine. “Every song represents a different aspect of our sound. We don’t stick to a single formula. And we have the goods to back it up live.”

“Our favorite thing is playing live shows, traveling, seeing new places, meeting new people,” adds Chris. “We just want to share that feeling we got from the bands that inspired us, and then We want to pass the torch.”

With their major label debut, Habits, Neon Trees light the fire.
